Michael Howarth's corners of the Internet (open in new windows):

  • Flickr - as photographer - saving the world from dismal photographs, a hundredth of a second at a time

  • University of Surrey (to 2014) - as academic - link to copy of my website that until 2025 was hosted by Surrey

    • My publications

      - Both Open Access and Archival copies of my papers are available

      - I'm delighted to see the UK rejoin the EU's Erasmus+ from 2027 and the EU Horizon programme (September 2023), belatedly undoing a small fraction of the disaster that is Brexit

    • My Google Scholar citations

    • My ResearchGate profile

  • Swanage - as railway enthusiast - my model railway layout, set in Summer 1947 in the days of the Southern Railway

"The thing with Europe is that you need three or four languages just to get through lunch"   [anon]

...and isn't that wonderful! So, I'm in a Spanish tapas bar in the centre of Berlin, speaking a mix of German and half-remembered Spanish with the waiter, talking with my companion in English, with occasional lapses into French, and am inspired to build this little multilingual website to act as the centre of my Internet presence

"A person who speaks three languages is trilingual. A person who speaks two languages is bilingual. A person who only speaks one language is English"   [Claude Gagnière]

"Into the face of the young man ... there had crept a look of furtive shame, the shifty hangdog look which announces that an Englishman is about to speak French"   [P. G. Wodehouse]
